The police serve an important function: enforcing just laws (such as the one against murder).
Even if most cops are bastards, doesn't mean that they all are.

So, to all those people who keep telling me that all police are super evil, that the Dutch police (and many other European police forces) are not meaningfully better than the murder cops in the US, how they are all just super keen on brutalizing anyone who is not a white cis-het man, or how it is worthless to try to get a good relationship with the police or how they should be unwelcome at pride no matter what: Read this and tell me with a straight face that this is not a good thing they did here or that any US police force would do that.

Yes, the Dutch police condemned a law that further criminalizes staying the Netherlands ilegally as harmful while it is in the process of being passed. And not just in internal advisory committees, but as
a public statement!

THIS is what I mean when I say that we need better police, not no police!

To quote from their press statement (and it’s all like this, this is not a case of a cherry-picked quote with a different direction of push than everything else):

Met het amendement wordt bovendien gesuggereerd dat elke illegale vreemdeling overlastgevend is of crimineel gedrag vertoont. De politie herkent dit beeld niet. Moreover, the amendment suggests that every illegal alien is a nuisance or exhibits criminal behavior. The police do not recognize this picture.#Police #NACAB

Yesterday Dutch parliament shamefully passed an extreme law criminalizing being undocumented, and also criminalizing aiding undocumented people. The Dutch national police has now released a statement that they can't support this. Most appreciated. https://www.politie.nl/nieuws/2025/juli/4/00-reactie-politie-op-instemming-tweede-kamer-met-anmw.html

If you want a nice example of “Not all cops are bastards”, I can recommend that you check out Fritz Bauer, the former public prosecutor general of Hesse in Germany.

The
English Wikipedia article about him is an okay start, but the German one, perhaps unsurprisingly, does a better job, though even that doesn’t quite get to the point. Here for example we have an interview about what is “normal” in which he expresses many rather modern views, including a repeated condemnation of capitalism.

To give some points about him: He was the driving force behind the prosecution of nazis, played a significant role in getting Eichmann caught, might have been gay (not quite clear on that, he did publicly call to remove some homophobic laws, but not demand their full removal, though he had enough enemies as it was and may not have wanted to draw more attention to him regarding that topic than he had to…), created legal precedents like nazi-Germany being an injustice state (“Unrechtsstaat”) and thereby not an entity that it is possible to commit treason against, but one against which everyone is entiteled to perform acts of (violent) resistance…

In other words, he is pretty close to a perfect representation of what a public prosecutor should be.

My new motto:

#NACAB

Not _all_ cops are bastards!
(Unfortunately most of them are still, but times are changing very slowly here in #Germany and #NRWE.)

1. #ACAB = All Cops Are Bastards
2. #AACAB = Almost All Cops Are Bastards
3. #NACAB = Not All Cops Are Bastards
4. #CANB = Cops Are Not Bastards
