15.8 Million French Medical Records Exposed in Third-Party Software Breach

Hackers stole 15.8 million patient files from French medical software firm Cegedim Santรฉ, exposing sensitive health data including HIV status and sexual orientation.

The Daily Perspective

The Australian Government has a central digital records system called My Health Record.

Anyone in the medical system have an intelligible take as to if this is worth the privacy costs to be sharing health info into a central health record.

Im weighing up the benefits of "medical staff being able to access my records in a time of high need" vs future versions of the state using this information to discriminate / make decisions in the background that are not in the individuals benefit.

The utter incompetence of the big consultancies on show in Australia. New IT infrastructure for Aged Care cost $685M in two years and it is nowhere near being released. An insider said that the system was so poorly designed that it was being scrapped and rebuilt from scratch. The My Health Record project which has blown out by 16 times and is now estimated to have cost $746M and delivered an "outdated, clunky, PDF-based system."

The amount of waste is truly astounding. I've worked in IT for over 20 years and can't fathom how that much money could be spent building what is essentially a CRM. Where does incompetence end and corruption start?

Consultants are supposed to bring commercial thinking and expertise to the government, but they're just gauging massive fees out of the taxpayer.

Funny these #myhealthrecord signs donโ€™t appear to present a choice

The #MyHealthRecord extended #OptOut deadline hasn't even passed, and there are 42 reported data breaches already!

Forty-two!

Got my opt out confirmation from #MyHealthRecord. Have you yet?

Consumer is a weird title to use imo

It's important to remember that the goal of #MyHealthRecord is not what people aren't boycotting. It's the fact that our data _cannot_ be kept secure. Opting in has to be an informed choice.

Thanks to all who joined the discussion โ™ฅ๏ธ

A member of the #MyHealthRecord development team was at the @[email protected] meetup tonight, and he was concerned about my call for people to opt out. The room had a fantastic impromptu discussion about the pros and cons.

This thread is such a sad story of @[email protected] failing to allow citizens to protect their own personal information.

An opt-out process that can't be completed is, essentially, forced opt-in.
