Following up on this...the report from Tracking Angle is correct: the long-out-of-print Mosaic version of this is, indeed, significantly better sounding, for whatever reason.

The Miles Davis Quintet's Live 10-LP Masterpiece Gets A Second Release

A new vinyl reissue of "The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel"

Miles Davis - The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965

Slowly working my way through this huge 10LP set of the Second Great Quintet (Miles Davis/Herbie Hancock/Wayne Shorter/Ron Carter/Tony Williams) push-push-PUSHing towards a new way of playing, namely: if you're bored with what's expected, do the opposite.

It can skirt right up to free playing, but then gets reined in...

Miles Davis Quintet - The Complete Live in Paris 1960, Vol. I

The wizards at The Lost Recordings (namely Frédéric D'Oria-Nicolas) managed to find the missing tapes in Brittany, ran down the rest in France, the US and Stockholm, and restored them.

So now we have the full concert, just post-Coltrane, with Davis (trumpet), Sonny Stitt (sax), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums).

As great as you'd expect.

The classic quintet live in 1964. Only classics on this album. This not so common Japanese promo landed on my doorstep recently.

Miles Davis - So What (Live at Festival Mondial Du Jazz Antibes, July 26,1963)

Miles Davis Quintet: Miles in France 1963 & 1964

More from the "interim" 2nd great quartet, with Coleman keeping Shorter's chair warm in the 1963 appearances, the first concert starts off with Carter plucking out So What's familiar bassline at near double-speed, no doubt anticipating Williams (who was only something like 17 at the time).

Herbie Hancock, of course, is in there too!

Miles Davis - Live in Europe 1967 - Bootleg Series Vol. 1

This is going to take a while. But, we're talking Davis/Shorter/Hancock/Carter/Williams, so it'll be a *good* long while...

(Finally a MoV repress of the first four bootleg volumes.)

Miles Davis Quintet - Miles in Tokyo

Recorded in 1964, this was a “transition quintet”, with Sam Rivers replacing George Coleman. I guess he didn't mesh with Miles, but regardless, it's interesting to hear his more daring soloing. The quintet includes Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams.

The album was originally Japan-only (hence the Japanese liner notes I'm going to have to Google Translate), and contains 5 lively tracks. Pretty great!
