Mesquite Dunes

Not far from Stovepipe Wells is Mesquite Flat Dunes. One of 5 areas in Death Valley that sand dunes form and easily the most accessible. The sand in these dunes is some of the finest sand that I have had the pleasure to walk on. The sand is very soft and certainly provides a good work out.
The sun was low in the sky creating a nice high contrast look.

Amber Waves Of Sand

Captured here is a view of Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley National Park.
On my way back from the larger dune I veered east on my way back to the parking lot in order to get a slightly different perspective. These dunes cover roughly 14 square miles but they are just over a mile wide. This image is looking east at the miles of dunes and waves of ever shifting sand.

Mesquite Dunes Black and White
Mesquite Sand Dunes are the largest and most accessible dune in Death Valley. They are located just east of Stovepipe Wells.
A round trip hike out to the largest dune is a 2 mile out and back and takes about an hour and a half. This image was captured about halfway to the big dune, if you look carefully, you can see other hikers up on the ridges.
