Another from engraving Moderne Kunst magazine (1898)

Mazeppa, the youth on the horse, was a Ukrainian cossack (1639 – 1709). After going a bit too far with the wife of a nobleman of the court, was strapped naked to a wild “Tartar” horse that was then made to gallop across the Steppes. He became very badly injured, but went on to become a hetman, or commander, and a leader in Ukraine.

Tomorrow in Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
there will be the first prayer for repose of the soul of Ivan #Mazepa, the second (after Bandera) most hated by russians Ukrainian

Mazepa was a Ukrainian (Cossack state) Hetman (~ king ), who broke alliance with Muscovite (in favor of the Swedes), but Sweden was defeated and as a result Ukraine was annexed by Muscovite Tzardom (after occupying Kyiv, Muscovite renamed themselves into russian empire )

Lavra was built by Mazepa himself, but after russians occupied it, he was cursed in this same monastery by new russian owners. Until full-scale invasion, Lavra was owned by russian KGB church, recently it was transferred to Ukrainian church (the real one)
