@MLNow I agree with Moritz on one thing: Prop D will "be more important in the long run than whoever becomes mayor." It would be a disaster, enabling corruption, favoritism, and mismanagement for whoever the next mayor is, and the one after that, and the one after that. #NoOnD #MayorDictator #sfpol

My mini crusade: when a journalist writes about Prop D (for Dictator) and doesn't mention that the whole commission-streamlining thing is nothing but a pretext to centralize power in the mayor's office (the better for billionaires to buy policy), I email them and ask them to include that context

Several have updated their pieces so far!

Not only is Mark Farrell using Prop D to skirt campaign finance law, but also Prop D would give the next mayor—possibly him—2/3 of appointments on Ethics Commission and ability to pull an appointee at will.

Say goodbye to accountability for any mayor if D (for #mayorDictator?) passes. I’d call it ironic but that’s probably the plan. 🎁🔗:

Deceptive description of #MayorDictator measure Prop D in the SF Standard.

No mention that Prop D vastly expands the power of the mayor's office, making it a unitary executive that appoints 2/3 of all commissions and boards and removes appointees at will.

No disclosure that the Standard's owner and funder Michael Moritz is the biggest donor to Prop D. #sfPol

Comparing the donations to the @sftransitact with donations to the Farrell/TogetherSF #mayorDictator charter amendment. Wow. VCs really want to convince you to make the mayor’s office a one-stop shop for bribery. https://missionlocal.org/2024/08/explore-5-data-takeaways-from-new-2024-election-filings/

Mahmood supports TogetherSF's cynical #MayorDictator measure, which claims to be about reforming commissions but really gives the mayor 2/3 appointing power with no confirmation to the powerful commissions it retains, making them a puppet show.

Probably a good idea to vote for @deanpreston instead, who correctly points out: "We have many problems in SF — lack of mayoral power isn’t one of them."

Meet the District 5 candidates: Where does power lie in SF? Here's the latest in our "Meet the Candidates" series for District 5, in which we ask each candidate to answer one question per week leading up to the election. Three candidates are challenging incumbent Supervisor Dean Preston to represent District 5, which spans from the east end of Golden Gate Park through Haight-Ashbury, Japantown and the Western Addition, the Lower Haight and Hayes Valley, and most of the Tenderloin. https://missionlocal.org/2024/05/meet-district-5-candidates-week17-mayor-power/

Mission Local covers the TogetherSF/Moritz #MayorDictator charter amendment (cynically disguised as commission reform) https://missionlocal.org/2024/05/togethersf-yanked-its-strong-mayor-ballot-measure-but-its-other-measure-is-also-a-strong-mayor-ballot-measure/
Did TogetherSF ever really drop its strong mayor voter measure?

TogetherSF dropped its strong mayor charter amendment to focus on a second measure ... which would also vastly enhance the mayor's power

If you see the Examiner story about Together SF supposedly pulling its measure to centralize power in the mayor's office because they're worried someone they don't like might become mayor and have reconsidered... Do not celebrate. They're lying. They have another measure that does the exact same thing that they're still collecting for. It just also eliminates commissions so they can call it commission reform. They're still trying to make the mayor a dictator. #sfPol #MayorDictator

Here's what the Moritz #MayorDictator measure does, straight from its official summary.

Keep in mind: Removing appointees at will would make them complete puppets of the mayor. It was a scandal when Mayor Breed used undated resignation letters to do this: https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/s-f-mayor-london-breed-s-resignation-letter-17769925.php

The mayor would also have sole power over Police Chief who in turn has sole power over regulating police. And removing stipends would ensure only the independently wealthy can serve on commissions. #sfPol
