Il Tempo: Gaffe fatale di Charlene con Papa Leone? Come stanno le cose

Accogliere il Pontefice in completo bianco durante una sua visita ufficiale: un errore? Uno sbaglio fatale? Assolutamente no. Charlene di Monaco, la principessa consorte e moglie di Alberto II di Monaco, non sbaglia un colpo e mette a tacere tutte le possibili critiche al suo outfit sfoggiato in occasione del benvenuto a Papa Leone nel Principato. Charlene, famosa per i suoi look sempre al di sopra delle aspettative e che ispirano eleganza senza pari, è infatti apparsa in total white all'arrivo del ponteficea Monte Carlo. Il fatto però ha animato le discussioni sui social e qualche critica è stata mossa nei confronti della principessa.

Quello però che pochi sanno è che invece Charlene ha seguito il protocollo alla lettera. Seppur sia quasi obbligatorio vestire di nero durante le udienze papali, la principessa ha applicato il “privilegio del bianco”, una concessione speciale applicata e riservata a pochissime sovrane o consorti cattoliche.
Il protocollo vaticano infatti prevede una deroga e consente a poche e selezionate sovrane di indossare abiti e veli bianchi in presenza del Pontefice. Tale privilegio è accordato ad alcune case reali cattoliche e il bianco simboleggia un'antica gratitudine della Santa Sede verso specifici regni cattolici e legati al Papa da profondi legami storici di amicizia.

Mentre quindi il resto delle consorti deve sfoggiare, secondo cerimoniale, un abito nero accollato con maniche lunghe e capo coperto,  Charlene invece ha vestito il bianco. Insieme a lei poche altre al mondo. Il “privilegio del bianco” è infatti riservato alla Regina Sofia e Letizia di Spagna, a Paola e Mathilde del Belgio, a Maria Teresa del Lussemburgo e alla principessa Marina di Napoli.
E, a sotterrare le critiche verso la principessa, anche i precedenti di Charlene di Monaco che ha già utilizzato in passato il completo bianco. Lo aveva già fatto ad esempio nel 2013 e in altre visite ufficiali, con buona pace del Vaticano e dei suoi protocolli cerimoniali.

However, this has fueled discussions on social media, and some criticism was directed at the princess.

What few people know is that instead, Charlene followed the protocol to the letter. Although it is almost obligatory to wear black during papal audiences, the princess applied the “privilege of white,” a special concession applied and reserved for very few queens or Catholic consorts.

The Vatican protocol stipulates a derogation and allows a few selected sovereigns to wear white clothing and veils in the presence of the Pontiff. And, to bury the criticism of the princess, are Charlene of Monaco’s previous records that she has already used in the past the full white suit. She had already done so, for example, in 2013 and in other official visits, to the good pleasure of the Vatican and its ceremonial protocols.
