Just saw this tik tok of students at IU bloomington being pushed out of a panel q&a for questioning the moral culpability that Sandia National Labs has, especially as the US arms a genocide in Gaza.

In my experience pushing back against NSA recruitment in math is that those who facilitate this recruitment find even the presence of critique in the same room as a threat, since it is indeed about facilitating recruitment and not helping people weigh all the information on potential futures. I am alas not surprised that IU reacted the same.

One of the other panelists at the event also made anti-Palestinian remarks against the students' choice to wear Keffiyeh.

Mastodon hasn't been scratching that social media dopamine hit as much as bluesky, but comparing how the #MathMinusMilitarism posts I made are doing, does make me want to hang out here more
If you don’t think the NSA is currently spying on you, you need to up your activism.

Currently the spy agency is trying to recruit mathematicians at their convention in the Moscone Center. #MathMinusMilitarism

If you don’t like the idea of the NSA watching you while you masturbate, tell Congress not to renew Section 702, again. They extended it for a few months last holiday season, but I wouldn’t call warrantless surveillance a gift.

Has Mathstodon heard about the protest that happened at the #JMM2024 career fair? A bunch of mathematicians took a stand against NSA recruitment. Here are some photos the Just Mathematics Collective posted to Twitter, including the "demonstration area" the AMS so graciously provided.
