The #Soviet space probe #Mars2 reached #Mars #ThisDayInHistory in 1971. It successfully entered orbit around the Red Planet, but its lander failed to touch down safely, impacting in the southern hemisphere. But it is still the first Earth-made object to reach the Martian surface.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1971, #NASA probe #Mariner9 narrowly beat #Soviet #Mars2 mission to become the first human spacecraft to enter #Mars orbit. During its operational history it mapped 85% of the surface, took 7300+ photos, and identified 20 #volcanoes, exceeding its goals.

OTD 1972, the Russian #Mars2 mission did reach Mars, but failed due to an unanticipated sand storm on the surface. Reprogramming was impossible at that stage, so the lander was deployed too soon. It misaligned and crashed.

Sadly, the identically constructed #Mars3 met with a similar fate only a couple of days later. But: Its lander didn't crash. It performed the first controlled landing ever on Mars, through the sand storm, before falling silent after just a couple of seconds.
