No.816: And just liked that, Manos became a trilogy. Yep, 52 years after the original, 2018 saw two Manos films released, the second of which was produced by Jackey Neyman Jones who played Debbie in both the original and this one (she played Manos the primal god of darkness in 'Manos: The Rise Of Torgo'). Most surprisingly, an 83 year-old Tom Neyman reprises his role as The Master.
In the present day (well, 2018) a group of friends happen upon a remote house and the caretaker Torgo (sans left hand as per the events of the original film). Inevitably they get trapped in a surrealistic nightmare and it's this that I do appreciate. While it's very much tongue-in-cheek, it does try to be its own film (and fleshes out the character of Torgo a bit).
For all that, is it a good film? On balance I suppose the answer would have to be no. The original is so utterly oddball that trying to do something worthy with it is always going to be doomed to failure. This is where the prequel 'Manos: The Rise Of Torgo' excelled in just leaning hard into the weirdness. I liked this movie, but that doesn't mean that it's successful as cinema.

No.815: It only took 52 years, but in 2018 the legendarily bad 'Manos, The Hands Of Fate' got a prequel in the form of 'Manos: The Rise Of Torgo'. Charmingly, the god of primal darkness Manos is played by Jackey Neyman who played 7 year-old Debbie in the original.
Anyhow, Torgo is the product of a moonshine-fuelled tryst between hillbillies and raised on a strict diet of fried chicken. Sub-normal and reviled by the local girls, he's recruited as a caretaker by The Master after his original caretaker Vasargo betrays him. This begins the tragedy of Torgo (and his gun-toting bangtail momma).
The makers of this prequel do such a good job of emulating the style(?) of the original movie that it goes a little beyond parody. While I'm not sure what any non Manos-fans would get out of this, I had a blast.

No.814: In 1966 fertiliser salesman Harold P Warren wrote, directed, produced and starred in 'Manos, The Hands Fate', a movie which would have forever languished in obscurity if MST3K hadn't resurrected the damned thing in 1993, thus ensuring a new (and mostly bemused) audience for this exercise in utter incompetence.
One critic claimed that it was interesting in as much as it presented the undiluted psyche of Warren on-screen. Was that a good thing?
You've got shots of characters reacting to the reactions of other characters reacting to them, terrible editing, pacing and framing, continuity errors, shots out of focus, nonsensical (and interminable) dialogue exchanges, a child actor dubbed by an adult woman and sequences of a couple making out in a car which have nothing to do with the rest of the movie. Oh, and Torgo the strangest character outside of a David Lynch picture.
Plotwise a family looking for directions happens upon the house of The Master. Despite the caretaker Torgo telling them that they can't stay, and the wife saying that she doesn't want to stay, Michael (Harold P Warren) just imposes himself anyway. Unfortunately, the house is the lair of The Master, a weirdo cult leader with six bickering wives. It's about at this point that everything stops making sense.
If Manos isn't the worst movie of all time, it's at least a strong contender.

Back in 2001, I dressed as Torgo from "Manos: The Hands of Fate" while playing the caretaker to a Halloween maze my father constructed on our front lawn. Good times!
