For this week's #TuneTuesday, the theme is about "songs that are good starters for a genre/subgenre, easing curious ears in to the particulars of that style of music"

By no means an expert on the genre whatsoever, but if I were to introduce someone into the world of #mallsoft, I'd suggest starting with a shorter song to see if they're interested, and then tell them to listen to a much longer song highly regarded in the community.

But what is mallsoft though?

It's an offshoot genre from vaporwave, which "is defined partly by its slowed-down, chopped and screwed samples of smooth jazz, 1970s elevator music, R&B, and lounge music from the 1980s and 1990s; similar to synthwave." (Wikipedia).

Mallsoft adds more ambience where it's as if you're in a shopping mall, with the listener hearing distant people having a muffled chat, footsteps, and announcements made over the tannoy, all mixed in with that nostalgic elevator music and soft jazz sound coming through the mall's speaker system. It's great music to put on in the background or just to vibe along with.

Songs can invoke the hustle and bustle of a busy shopping mall, or the emptiness and desolation of something that was a popular past time but is no more, particularly in Western culture. Songs can also be more straight forward soundscapes, or can be heavily edited to involve satire or messages about overconsumption.

Settings also vary from the realistic, such as a 1990s American mall, to the fictional with, for example, songs based on malls in space or on distant planets. Albums are often entire concepts set in the same mall, with songs rolling into each other seamlessly, making it a tad difficult to pick a song to enter in on as I'd usually suggest an album. Nonetheless, here are two songs I suggest, with the first being quite short and the second being a twenty-two minute holy grail of the genre:
