È successo in Thailandia e la protagonista involontaria della vicenda è Moo Deng, l’ippopotamo pigmeo diventato celebre online grazie a uno sbadiglio che ha fatto il giro del mondo. Milioni di like, migliaia di condivisioni e un esercito di fan. Ma la fama, si sa, ha anche i suoi lati più “inquietanti”.
Secondo quanto riportato da Associated Press, martedì sera un uomo è stato arrestato dopo essere entrato nel recinto dell’animale allo zoo all’aperto di Khao Kheow, una struttura molto popolare nel Paese asiatico. Secondo quanto riferito dal direttore dello zoo, Narongwit Chodchoy, l’intruso, un cittadino thailandese, sarebbe riuscito ad accedere all’area mentre un guardiano non era presente e nei dintorni non c’erano visitatori.
Le immagini delle telecamere di sicurezza, poi circolate sui social, mostrano l’uomo mentre si avvicina agli animali con un tablet in mano, probabilmente per scattare foto o registrare video. È rimasto nel recinto solo per uno o due minuti prima che il personale dello zoo si accorgesse della situazione e avvisasse la polizia, che in seguito lo ha accusato di violazione domestica. Non avrebbe tentato la fuga. Dopo l’episodio, la direzione ha rassicurato sullo stato di salute degli animali: Moo Deng e la mamma Jona non sono state toccate, anche se sarebbero apparse un po’ spaventate e resteranno sotto osservazione veterinaria.

Da allora lo zoo è diventato meta di visitatori arrivati anche dall’estero.

It happened in Thailand, and the unwitting protagonist of the story is Moo Deng, the dwarf hippopotamus who became famous online thanks to a yawn that went around the world. Millions of likes, thousands of shares, and an army of fans. But fame, as they say, has its more “troubling” sides.

According to Associated Press, on Tuesday evening a man was arrested after entering the animal’s outdoor enclosure at the Khao Kheow zoo, a very popular facility in the Asian country. According to zoo director Narongwit Chodchoy, the intruder, a Thai citizen, was able to access the area while a guard was not present and there were no visitors nearby.

Images from security cameras, which then circulated on social media, show the man approaching the animals with a tablet in his hand, likely to take photos or record videos. He remained in the enclosure for only one or two minutes before the zoo staff realized the situation and alerted the police, who subsequently charged him with trespassing. He did not attempt to flee. After the incident, the management reassured the public about the animals’ health: Moo Deng and mother Jona were not touched, although they appeared a little scared and will remain under veterinary observation.

The popularity of Moo Deng exploded in 2024 thanks to the content published online by a zoo guard.
