Thinking back to yesterday’s EAS 2025 social event, I think the song that attracted the greatest degree of audience participation was this one. It’s very well-known and the chorus is great for a singalong. Anyone who has any Irish relatives – especially an uncle with a fondness for the drink – will certainly have heard this!

Something I've only just discovered: Luke Kelly was a card-carrying member of the Communist Party of Great Britain, and became an active participant in left-wing organisations such as the Young Communist League and the Connolly Association in England.

Luke Kelly died on 30 January 1984 in Dublin, aged just 43 years old. His gravestone in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin, bears the inscription: "Luke Kelly – Dubliner". Go raibh suaimhneas síoraí air.

On 17 November 1940 Luke Kelly (Lúcás Ó Ceallaigh) was born in Sheriff Street, Dublin. His father, also named Luke, was shot and severely wounded as a child by British soldiers from the King's Own Scottish Borderers during the 1914 Bachelor's Walk massacre. Luke Óg went on to be a key member of the Dubliners.

The Bachelor's Walk massacre occurred in Dublin, on 26 July 1914, when a column of troops of the King's Own Scottish Borderers were accosted by a crowd on Bachelor's Walk. After some baiting, the troops attacked “hostile but unarmed” protesters with rifle fire and bayonets - resulting in the deaths of four civilians and injuries to in excess of 30 more. Luke Kelly senior, the father of Luke Kelly of The Dubliners, was one of the wounded.
