Strange New Worlds "Those Old Scientists"
A portal on the planet Krulmuth-B sends Ensign Boimler (from Star Trek: Lower Decks) back around 120 years in his past, where he meets Captain Pike (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) and the crew of the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701.
๐ธ Before being sent back in time, Tendi tells Boimler that Orions discovered the portal on Krulmuth-B. And, that her great-grandmother was part of the crew on the Orion ship that discovered the portal. Boimler disagrees, and implies that at the time all Orions were pirates.
๐๐พ The events below happen in Captain Pike's time. ๐๐พ
๐ธ While not at war with each other, Starfleet and Orions are not on friendly terms. During an encounter with an Orion ship over Krulmuth-B, Boimler's statement that not all Orions at the time were pirates is met with skepticism by the Enterprise bridge crew.
๐ธ The captain of the Orion ship introduces himself as Captain Harr Caras of the science vessel D'Var. His skin and the pupils of his eyes are olive green in color, and his hair is brown. Captain Caras' clothing is black in color, and tailored, with dull gray metallic decorations on the shoulders of his long coat. An over the shoulder strap has a holster for what appears to be a hand held weapon. The weapon is openly displayed and available for easy access.
๐ธ The members of Caras' crew who are seen also wear black color outfits with similar cuts, although each wears a distinctly different style. Whether or not the style differences indicates rank, position, or personal taste is not stated. Both Orions are female, and they have olive green color skin. One has brown hair, and one appears to have black color hair although that may be due to the lighting. I cannot discern the color of their eyes. The Orion crew member seen on the D'Var also wears a hand held weapon openly, and easy to access.
๐ธ Pike tells Caras that the Enterprise is in the area because of Orion pirate attacks on Federation colonies. Caras says that Orion pirates give Orions a bad name, and then he beams the portal aboard the D'Var. Not necessarily Orion pirate-y behavior. When Spock reports what Caras did, Caras denies it and warps away. Kind of Orion pirate-y behavior.
๐ธ The Enterprise catches up to the D'Var, in an attempt to get the portal back so as to return Boimler to his own time. Hoping to help avoid a violent confrontation, and likely altering his own timeline, Boimler tells Pike that Orions consider an offer of trade as a gesture of respect. The tritriticale grain the Enterprise is taking to a colony is traded to the Orions for the portal. The D'Var and the Enterprise peacefully part ways afterwards.
๐ธ Mariner, who is now also in Pike's time, makes a drink called an Orion hurricane. One of the genuine drink's ingredients is an alcoholic beverage named Orion delaq. There is no Orion delaq on the Enterprise, and Mariner improvises the drink's components. The Orion hurricane Mariner makes is green in color. Whether the name comes from the drink's color (which may not be green when Orion delaq is used) or because of the Orion delaq is not stated.
๐ธ Boimler makes an unauthorized contact with the Orions, wanting to trade the portal back for the much needed tritriticale grain. Meeting back on Krulmuth-B, Mariner and Boimler explain to Caras that they need to use the portal just once because they are from the future, a future where it is offensive to assume that all Orions are pirates. Pike offers to give credit for the discovery of the portal to Orions, specifically to Orion scientists. Caras is pleased and moved by the offer, and accepts it.
Boimler implies to Tendi that Orions during Captain Pike's time were all pirates. Tendi's concerns about how Orions were and still are perceived, which she expresses over the course of Star Trek: Lower Decks, are not unfounded.
Whether the hand weapons seen worn by Captain Caras and another Orion on the D'Var is something they normally wear, or something they put on before contacting the Enterprise is not stated.
In the episodes of Star Trek I've watched, Orion clothing colors are primarily black and earth tones. Why the preference for that color palette, which continues in the 32nd century, is not explained.
That there are Orion scientists is not surprising. Where those scientists fall in the Orion Syndicate hierarchy, or if they are even a part of it, is not stated. Other than Tendi, at this point Orions in Star Trek have only been observed in few ways. Either as part of the Orion Syndicate or the Emerald Chain (Star Trek: Discovery), or providing or indulging in recreational or criminal activities.
