The story of Love and Psyche, immortalized by Canova in the sculptural group displayed at the Louvre, originates within a prohibition. Psyche finds a remedy to the solitude imposed by Aphrodite by binding herself to a husband she cannot see. But desire is not satisfied with what she has; it is always directed towards something that doesn’t exist, that doesn’t yet exist, or that once existed and no longer does.
