Happy hump day, everyone. Here in San Francisco it is a mild, almost cloudless, blue sky day. Terrible for gloomy photography but a good day to get outside and generate some vitamin D's. Yuck.

Anyway... a couple of days ago I posted a monochrome, 10-second, lens-zoom photo of a bridge. Here is another, taken a few minutes earlier. This one was taken with a different zoom pattern. Instead of 5 steady seconds followed by a 5 second zoom, this one used 3 steady, 4 zoom, and 3 more steady.

The pattern mattered. Instead of a picture with light streaks, this result was more "abstract double-exposure." It's a bit of a hot mess but still kinda cool.

FYI, the original bridge post was here:

Okay, here's something different: lens zooming with a bridge I've shot many times before.

Pentax K3, Sigma 18-250mm lens, and a 2-10 stop variable ND filter. The camera was perched on my kneecap while I sat cross-legged on the ground. And the lens was zoomed out as smoothly as I could manage, from an initial 18mm to about 100mm during a 1.33 second exposure.

Aiming and keeping the camera steady was rough. It took five or six attempts to get this right. Great art it ain't... but I am quite pleased with the result.

Six seconds at the San Mateo County Fair.

The effect was created in-camera by focusing on a carnival ride and ticket booth for 3 or 4 seconds, then zooming my lens for the remaining exposure. Some lights, like those outlining the ferris wheel, were blinking on and off so they didn't get dragged through the frame as the lens zoomed.

And yeah, it took more than a few attempts to get this shot. There were a lot of variables to play with: exposure length, focus freeze and zoom speed, timing with the flashing lights, and people wandering into the frame.

Speaking of the Palace of Fine Arts, here is something I originally posted about 9 months ago: the Palace at night, taken while zooming slowly (30 seconds) using an ultrawide 8-16mm lens.

I'm rather fond of this picture. It's kind of like a weird, glowing transformer. On drugs.
