Highlights: The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office lifted evacuations in Zones 6 and Zone 7 on Friday evening. Zones 3 and Zone 5 were changed from “Go” to “Get set.” A Forest Closure Order of Missionary Ridge Road remains in place.

New fire activity is still possible, especially as the weather gets warmer and drier in the days ahead…

…Operations Today:

Mop-up operations will continue and additional containment is expected in areas where there is high confidence that control lines will hold.

Mapping missions are planned in Division Golf (north), and firefighters there will continue securing line into Division Uniform (northeast).

Helicopters will again be available to make water drops and ferry supplies in support of the crews on the ground.

Operations Today:

• Hotshot crews will continue constructing fireline in Bear Creek. This is slow, difficult work, even for skilled crews with moderated fire behavior. Afternoon thunderstorms will likely force crews off the line early again for safety reasons. Lightning poses a danger, as well as outflow winds causing dead trees to fall.

• Crews will continue to add depth to the firelines closest to homes and other values at risk by using water to extinguish hot spots. “Mopping up” is time consuming but helps ensure lines will be secure if hidden embers inside the perimeter re-emerge and cause flare-ups. This effort should lead to additional containment today.

• Four large “heavy” helicopters, and one smaller helicopter will be used to support fire crews. The focus of the aviation assets continues to be dropping water in the Bear Creek drainage, if needed.

Highlights: Cooler and more humid weather yesterday moderated fire behavior, though wind pushed fire further into Bear Creek Canyon. Firefighters on the ground made progress constructing and strengthening fire lines on the west, east and southern sides of the fire, supported by bulldozers and aircraft. No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged. There was no change to evacuation orders on Monday. Additional resources continue to arrive, and others have been ordered. Some light rain is possible this afternoon, accompanied by gusty, erratic wind.

Fire Behavior & Weather: Tuesday’s forecast calls for increased cloud cover and higher humidity with a 10% chance of showers in the afternoon. While slightly cooler, more humid weather decreases the chances for new fire growth, thunderstorms also bring gusty winds and the chance of lighting. Outflow winds from thunderstorms can push the fire in any direction and lightning can cause new fires.

Operations Yesterday:

Bulldozer and hand line was completed along much of the eastern edge of the fire, reaching the rim of Bear Creek Canyon on the north.

The Helena Hotshots began constructing new fire line on the northwest side of the fire and made good progress extending the line towards Bear Creek Canyon.

Helicopters continued to make water drops to slow the fire’s growth and protect containment lines.

Congratulations to Rep. Barbara McLachlan (HD 59) for being elected as the chair of the #co House Education Committee. She will do #ArchuletaCounty #LaPlataCounty and #MontezumaCounty proud.
It will be a tough job. While I was canvassing I got several earfuls from mothers complaining about the lack of programs in #PagosaSprings for students with reading disorders. As #co heads into #mississippi levels of teacher pay, we need to look for a way to carve school funding out from #TABOR.
