#SpaceSaturday: This is a refurbished #Atlas #rocket #engine LR89-NA-7 produced by #Rocketdyne until 1960S. The original #AtlasRocket was a “Stage-and-a-Half” type rocket. #Engineers had concerns about the reliability of igniting an engine at high altitude, so the Atlas launched with all 3 engines burning, and would then jettison the two “booster” engines on either side of the “sustainer” engine after about two and a half minutes and continue to fly on the remaining engine.
The Soviet R-7 also ignited all its engines at liftoff, then jettisoned the four outboard stages, tanks and engines, and leave only a single set of fuel and oxidizer tanks and a set of engines remaining, a method called parallel staging.
This #RocketEngine is on display the Air Force #Space and #Missile #Museum in Cape #Canaveral, #Florida.
