"There is a really unique spirit and energy here," - Anne Applebaum on Ukraine at #LMF2025
An American historian and journalist reflects on what makes Ukraine extraordinary: its resilience, creativity, volunteering, lasting institutions despite war, its defence innovations, and its remarkable commitment to both self-defence and caring for veterans.
"These are symptoms of a healthy society... I feel inspired by you. I feel that you can give a couple of lessons to other parts of the world."
"It's extremely rare that you can do a war and democracy at the same time, but you can." - Ilana Bet-El, historian, writer, senior strategist, at #LMF2025
Democracy justifies the fight and gives meaning to the sacrifice. Ukraine is proving that these two forces can coexist, she added.
"There was somebody corrupt somewhere there in Kyiv, and he's getting bonuses from that. But honestly, it's not always true." - Andrii Borovyk, an expert in good governance, anti-corruption, and European integration, at #LMF2025
Corruption narratives can become weapons. We must consider how this information affects Ukraine's standing in the war, he added.
Fun fact! The Russians always use the old Communist names of Ukrainian cities that they try to occupy, disregarding the new ones adopted through decommunization to break with the Soviet past.
But there is one exception: New York, Donetsk Oblast. Its Soviet name is Novhorodske (1951-2021). The Russians always say that they they occupied New York. H/t Artem Zakharchenko at #LMF2025
When politicians make false claims about everyday realities, such as Trump's statements about gas prices, then this deliberate undermining of truth serves to foster public apathy, says Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum.
"This really is the road to autocracy, because once people say 'everyone's lying, there's no truth,' then why would you participate in politics at all. So, it's a way of creating apathy and nihilism," Applebaum said on the last day of #LMF2025.
.@globalvoices managing editor @nasredinhoja on how they differ from traditional media at #LMF2025:
Editors are people who have zero power in the newsroom. They are there to listen to the journalists from each country and help shape their stories for global readership
"Ukraine is not a corrupt country. Ukraine is a country that is fighting corruption," states Andrii Borovyk, Ukrainian expert in anti-corruption and European integration, during #LMF2025.
"Ukraine has a unique status as the only country to become an EU candidate while at war. Ukraine continues implementing reforms in areas that Western democracies find impossible even during peacetime," Borovyk said.

Yana Stepanenko lost both legs in a Russian missile strike on Kramatorsk.
She underwent rehabilitation. Started to run marathons - one in Boston, then in Japan.
She is now an ambassador of the UNBROKEN rehab center in Lviv - and a symbol of being unbroken. #LMF2025
