NASA fired its space lasers to communicate with the ISS

NASA used space lasers to send 4K video streams from an airplane to Earth, then to a satellite, and then to the ISS and back to Earth.

2023 was a big year for laser communications at #NASA! It saw the first bi-directional laser communications relay with the #ISS performed by the #LCRD mission (at over 1 Gbps), a 267 Mbps downlink from deep space (19 million miles away) by the #DSOC mission, and 200 Gbps throughput on a laser link with a LEO orbiting spacecraft by the #TBIRD mission.

The 29th commercial resupply services mission (CRS-29) to the International Space Station launches tonight. Among other things, it will deliver ILLUMA-T, a #laserCommunications terminal that will be used to experiment with communications to the ground via the #LCRD laser communications relay satellite.
