The #US Congress stepped up with $700 million in funding for a new #Mars π΄ Telecommunications πΆ Orbiter
#NASA is looking into developing a relay system of #communications πΆ satellites placed in other locations in the #SolarSystem π, which could cut down the two-week blackout (when the Sun is between Earth and #Mars π΄) to just a few hours. #LaserCommunications would allow for more data per second, with superior signal fidelity https://www.planetary.org/articles/challenges-facing-the-human-exploration-of-mars
#NASA is seeking proposals for the #Mars π΄ Telecommunications Network by π June 15. #MTN is expected to be ready by the end of π 2028.
Eight companies might be eligible : #BlueOrigin, #L3Harris, #LockheedMartin, #NorthropGrumman, #RocketLab, #SpaceX, #QuantumSpace and #Whittinghill Aerospace https://spacenews.com/nasa-releases-final-rfp-for-mars-communications-orbiter/

The #Mars Relay Network (#MRN) is an international constellation of spacecraft orbiting the Red Planet π΄ that send #science data from surface rovers back to Earth
β’ #MarsOdyssey ~ 170.4 Mb/day
β’ #MRO ~ 447.5 Mb/day
β’ #ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter ~ 1,562.7 Mb/day

The drones did not succeed in striking the #spaceport, but the attempted attacks come as #Russia ramps up activity at Plesetsk Cosmodrome to deploy a new constellation of Internet and data relay satellites akin to SpaceXβs #Starlink
Linguistic observations from yesterday's splashdown:
1. How to balance clarity and politeness in rejecting a suggestion when the whole world is listening: "That's a moderately good idea. Can we hang on to it for a while."
2. "Go" as an adjective: "Weather at the landing site is go."
3. "Delta" as a noun: "There are no delta."
Copy. I'm going to start using all of these.
#Artemis laser communications πΆ system : βWe got 20 gigabytes down in a little more than 45 minutes. Thatβs orders of magnitude more than we get via our S-band telemetry systemβ.
#Toilet π½ : Engineers have ruled out ice buildup where the vent line ejects wastewater into space. Some of the chemistry may be creating debris of some kind clogging a filter.
#Reentry : splash down off the coast of San Diego, at 8:07 p.m. Eastern April 10 (2:07 AM CEST) https://spacenews.com/artemis-2-science-gets-underway-as-orion-begins-its-return-trip/
How do you #communicate πΆ with a #spacecraft when the #Moon is in the way ? #China π¨π³ uses relay satellites π°οΈ, #Queqiao launched on π 20 May 2018. It can support missions across the whole of the Moon https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/space-missions/queqiao-lunar-constellation

The #optical communications πΆ system can only be used at night, as sunlight can cause interference.
So all of the live imagery from the flyby has to be directed through the #radio direct pipeline.
Thereβs a limited number* of ground stations π‘ on Earth that are currently able to support signals to and from the Moon at high data rates

#ispace expects to deploy at least five lunar orbiting #satellites π°οΈ by 2030, which will serve as critical infrastructure for the #communications πΆ system.
Critical to the new business will be the development of #GroundStation π‘ services on Earth capable of stably receiving large-capacity communications and data from the #Moon π https://www.ispace-inc.com/news-en/?p=8731

Ispace is a private lunar robotic exploration company that is developing micro-robotic technology to provide a low-cost and frequent transportation service to and on the Moon, conduct lunar surface exploration to map, process and deliver resources to our customers in cislunar space.
