It's #Kaijuktober! And to celebrate it I'm watching a #kaiju #movie every day.

Today's movie was: Terror of Mechagodzilla / メカゴジラの逆襲 (1975)

#Toho's last #film from the showa era was a sequel to the infamous Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974). Aliens, robots, international spies, and kaiju are back, but the ancient deities are noticeably missing. Director Ishirō Honda did as much as he could with the hand he was dealt: not much.

I give it 2½/5 Kaiju

妖怪百物語 [Yōkai hyakumonogatari / Yokai Monsters: 100 Monsters] (Kimiyoshi Yasuda, 1968)

Oct

4

One-hundred monsters! (via). DPs: Yasukazu Takemura & Shōzō Tanaka.

[A favourite] horror movie with more than one bad guy*

A shrine must give way to a brothel, and a game of supernatural storytelling follows. At the end of the spooky tales, the landowner neglects to complete the all-important purification ceremony resulting in one-hundred yōkai – one for each story – coming out to haunt the rich man and his cronies.

* the Bales 2025 Film Challenge for October is horror-themed as opposed to date-based, and is all about favourites. Expect non-horror and films I believe to be relevant instead.

Jade, in the flesh. She's a bit more round than the squeaky version...too much tuna?

(It turns out there are some color errors I need to fix on the inflatable version.)

Today's movie was: Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla / ゴジラ対メカゴジラ (1974)

#Toho's second to last #film from the showa era features ancient gods, giant robots, aliens, and international spies — needless to say, kaiju too.

This mess, which I like to refer to as "the pinnacle of absurdity" was of course directed by Jun Fukuda...

I give it 2½/5 Kaiju

It's #Kaijuktober! And to celebrate it I'm watching a #kaiju #movie every day.

Today's movie was: Godzilla vs Megalon / ゴジラ対メガロ (1973)

The third to last #film in the #Toho showa era features at least some degree of originality. Mixing spy and #scifi elements with his characteristic humor, Jun Fukuda offers a fun movie for kids and adults alike, plus, there's a robot!

I give it 3/5 Kaiju

Today's movie was: Godzilla vs Gigan / 地球攻撃命令 ゴジラ対ガイガン (1972)

A soulless #film made to please an ignorant producer that couldn't recognize true genius if it hit him in the face. Chasing the golden age of kaiju cinema Shinichi Sekizawa and Jun Fukuda ended up giving us exactly what nobody asked for: more of the same.

I give it 2½/5 Kaiju

It's #Kaijuktober! And to celebrate it I'm watching a #kaiju #movie every day.

Today's movie was: All Monsters Attack / ゴジラ・ミニラ・ガバラ オール怪獣大進撃 (1969)

A #film that subverts all tropes in the kaiju "genre", offering a whimsical adventure through the eyes of a bullied child. Ishirō Honda and Shinichi Sekizawa achieved what at that point was believed to be impossible: offer a fresh take.

I give it 3½/5 Kaiju

Attached: 1 image It's #Kaijuktober! And to celebrate it I'm watching a #kaiju #movie every day. Today's movie was: Destroy All Monsters / 怪獣総進撃 (1968) They decided to go all out with this #film, bringing not only every previous kaiju in a surprisingly coherent story, but going above and beyond with a #scifi plot that even involves space traveling. A solid entry in a mostly disappointing decade. I give it 3½/5 Kaiju 🦖🦖🦖⭕❌ #movies #MastodonRecommendsMovies #ShareYourMovies #cinema #cinemastodon #KFF #怪獣

Tomorrow I'll be watching Space Amoeba / ゲゾラ・ガニメ・カメーバ 決戦! 南海の大怪獣 (1970). The movie that kickstarts the 70s, and the sole non-Godzilla movie in the rest of the schedule. I hope it's good.

Here's the schedule for the rest of the week:

@maxalmonte14 it's uhhh.

I mean, it's great. Is it good? I'll leave that up to you, but it's great.

@ajroach42 I've been loving Toho's more sci-fi(sh) movies so far, most of them are as good, if not better than the purely kaiju ones. They probably didn't gave the movie a big budget, by the mid 60s they had lost faith in what they were doing, so I expect to see a lot of cut corners. It will probably have a ton of recycled shots from The Mysterians and Destroy All Monsters, since they both take place in space, LOL.

@maxalmonte14 it's been a few years, but as I remember it: it's fine. Nothing egregiously bad. Nothing super poorly done. Nothing super well executed either.

I liked it a lot, and the monster is exceptionally goofy, which is what I prefer.

@ajroach42 I can take a little goofiness, although I'm not a fan. I think letting Jun Fukuda run amok with Son of Godzilla set something hard to stop in motion, and I expect the final six movies to be, overall, goofier than most others.
This movie could have been a perfect 5/5 if, and only if, they had put a little more effort into the actual production of it. The story is perfect, the acting is perfect, the B-plot is perfect, everything is, except for the high amount of recycled shots and short runtime. The movie was obviously made as a way to made a quick buck, and to keep the kaiju genre fresh in the mind of movie-goers.
So, where's the genius of this movie? First of all, kaiju don't canonically exist in the world the movie takes place, they're as real as Power Rangers and SpongeBob are in our world: they exist as fiction. Then, there's this kid, neglected by his parents and bullied by schoolmates, he's obsessed with kaiju 'cause they offer escapism; he dreams of visiting Monster Island and hanging out with Godzilla's son, literally, he dreams about that, and that's what we see. Freakin' brilliant.
Maybe it's because as a kid I had to deal with similar issues and dreamed of escaping to the Pokémon world and I too become a ̶a̶n̶i̶m̶a̶l̶ ̶a̶b̶u̶s̶e̶r̶ Pokémon master that I can see the genius of this movie. Maybe other people shake their fist at it for not showing the destruction of Tokyo yet again, I don't know. Whatever the case, and considering the small budget it probably got — there are barely any familiar faces in it — I love it.
@maxalmonte14 My kids watched this constantly. They were always bugging me to check it out from the library.
@lysdexic understandable, I just watched it for the first time and felt like a 10 year old kid. It's a pretty solid movie.
