Edmonton municipal elections have begun.
If you live in Edmonton -even if you are not interested in politics-
This is an important election. The provincial government has interceded itself into the municipal elections by allowing the creation of parties that can accept donations by big corporations. It also allows a no disclosure clause that doesn’t require candidates to disclose their donors until after the election. This is bad for local politics as your councilor (if part of one of these parties) will vote along party lines and your views will not be considered. The other aspect is it puts those candidates at a huge financial advantage and the wishes of those big donors become policy.
That’s a summary of the state of municipal politics in Alberta.
