How I Paint: Jade Tigers

The Jade Tigers are my daughter’s mercenary unit for the campaign that we’re playing. Initially she was just using my Clan Jade Falcon Delta Galaxy miniatures, but I decided to paint up her units in a custom scheme. After chatting a bit about ideas, we settled on light grey units with green, tiger-striped accents.

For the Jade Tigers color scheme, I used the following process:

  • Start with a grey base coat (I used Vallejo Grey spray)
  • Paint the model with Administratum Grey (pretty close to the Vallejo Grey spracy)
  • Paint metallic bits with Leadbelcher
  • Pick out some accent areas (I did the lower legs and top of the torso) and paint them with Warpstone Glow
  • Wash the entire miniature with Nuln Oil
  • Re-layer the panels with Administratum Grey and Warpstone Glow
  • Edge highlight the grey with Grey Seer
  • Edge highlight the green with Sybarite Green
  • Paint tiger stripes on the green areas with Black Templar
  • For the tiger stripes, or other small details in black, I like using Black Templar contrast paint because it flows nicely off the brush while having enough pigment to still end up as black stripes. Alternatively, a standard black paint will work but you’ll want to add a bit of water to dilute it enough so that it flows nicely off of a small brush.

So far I’ve only painted three of these, but I’ll be painting more when my daughter decides to buy additional units during our campaign.
