Prof. Rachel Thorn 🍉🇺🇦🏳️⚧️🏳️I think I told the story of the ex-pro boxer who came to the first lesson of the free #JSL course and was SHOCKED to learn that JSL was not simply learning the Japanese equivalent of the sign alphabet and then just spelling out Japanese. It reminded me of the old Steve Martin joke, "It's like those French have a different word for everything!" JSL has a different grammar than Japanese, and, yes, they have a different sign for everything. That boxer never came back after that first lesson.
I was watching the girls goof around, and signed to the mother "Cute." A brief but friendly conversation in #JSL ensued before I had to say goodbye and get off at my stop. The little girls were very interested in this very tall, overdressed white person of (to them) ambiguous gender with whom their Mama was signing.
Yesterday I had a chance to use my very limited Japanese Sign Language for the first time in two or three years. A woman with two very young girls boarded the subway and I immediately noted that the more lively girl had cochlear implants. She was vocalizing very well (and very loudly), and her mother responded to the girl in #JSL. I realized that all three were #Deaf. (Few hearing parents of Deaf children bother to learn JSL, and even if they do, they aren't fluent like this woman was.) cont.↓
