In #Israel, ethnic cleansing is done legally, one erased village at a time

Within a month and a half, authorities will expel all residents of Umm al-Hiran to settle settlers in the area

[...] The Supreme Court acknowledged all this in its ruling on the residents' petition against their eviction, for the establishment of the "Dror" settlement by a religious nucleus of graduates from the Eli pre-military academy in the occupied Palestinian territories. It ruled that the residents were "authorized" and not trespassers, that initially it would have been appropriate to recognize the village, "but since it was already decided to establish Dror, there is no choice but to evacuate the village." In 2010, the Hiran nucleus was established from among the "Beit Midrash for Army Graduates." The nucleus reports on its Facebook page that it "continues to grow and connect families who want to be partners in a great mission and vision of Torah."

[...] Parallel to plans to erase the villages, the state is planning about 20 new settlements for Jews only in exactly the same places, "so that the policy is actually population replacement - removing members of the wrong race and bringing in members of the right race. Such a policy, under the guise of maintaining the rule of law, essentially borders on ethnic cleansing and constitutes blatant racial discrimination. Due to the persistence of this policy, it can certainly be said that Israel is no less an ethnocracy than a democracy - and perhaps more so," the Council emphasized.

The actions and policies, including the expansion of settlements in occupied territories, forced displacement of Palestinian communities, and the judicial support for these actions, align with definitions of ethnic cleansing, as used by international organizations and experts.
