Ottoman Empire, also sometimes called as Turkish Empire, was the recent epitome of Islamic governance holding peace and justice, for Muslims and non-Muslims equally, and primarily protecting Islamic faith and values from ambiguous ideologies. Understanding their exemplary governance and the fall of Muslim Ummah is of utmost importance. The objective would be, to draw a clearance between the Islamic system (nizãm) and the contemporary Imperialism [As genocide of Palestinians continues, we need analysis of these issues].

  • Ottoman Empire

Ottoman Empire was a recent Islamic governance (13th- 20th century) controlling centrally from Anatolia (modern Turkey) stretching to Europe, South Asia, and North Africa. As Islam guides mankind for establishing khilafat that will maintain justice, peace, security to all, Muslims and non-Muslims equally, and hence fulfill the command of shukr (gratitude to Allah).

    To achieve universal domain of justice, the circle of justice (daire-i adalet) was implemented. This was the concept of maintaining justice, formerly mentioned by Aristotle and later reproduced by Arab scholars Ibn al-Biṭrīq (d. 815 CE) and Ibn Khaldun (d. 1406 CE),” that emphasised the interdependence between rulers and subjects and formed the basis for Ottoman security and protection”. As Kınalızâde Ali Çelebi , Ottoman writer and jurist, describes the relation of social system as;

There can be no royal authority without the military …There can be no military without wealth …The subjects produce the wealth …Justice preserves the subjects’ loyalty to the sovereign… Justice requires harmony in the world …The world is a garden, its walls are the state …The Holy Law (shari’a) orders the state …There is no support for the shari’a except through royal authority1

    Exemplary Governance

Ottoman’s maintenance of justice was not like current day speeches of politicians but perfect examples for Muslim Ummah. For them, Justice and righteousness was the ultimate, even Sultans were to face court if did any injustice.

Even sultans could not interfere in the courts or qadis. If needed, the courts asserted the public against the sultan. Laws were above the sultan. For example, the sheikh al-Islam, the supreme judge and highest official, Ebussuud Efendi, objected the orders of the sultan, reportedly saying, “If the customary law goes against ecclesiastical law, even the sultan’s orders aren’t valid.”2

The society free from despotism , giving full-scale power of law to fight against injustice is the sole motivation for public support.

Bartholomaeus Georgieviç, who stayed in the Ottoman Empire as a captive in the 16th century, said, “The judges of Turks and Christians are the same. Muslim judges offer the same justice to everyone without any discrimination. The one who killed is killed, the one who stole or took something by force is executed by hanging. The same rule is enforced for a janissary who drank a cup of milk of a woman in the bazaar and does not pay for it. I witnessed it in Damascus.3

The exercise of power, by Ottomans, was exemplary for both maintaining Justice as well as protection of Islamic religion from foreign ideological invasions. Among them was Mehmed II, who attained three titles for his glorious Caliphate ; Gazi, Khan, and Caesar. As Khan, Mehmed II prevented any of Timür’s descendants from claiming overlordship. Likewise, as Caesar, Mehmed II seized possession of the Roman imperial throne, caused the downfall of Byzantium, and prevented an anticipated crusade. And Gazi, as he built Eyüp Sultan Mosque at the site of constantinople to emphasize the importance of the conquest to the Islamic world.

Another example, the Sultan Suilaiman I, who continued principles of sharia and fair treatment of his citizens regardless of their religion. His governance, as Kınalızâde Ali Çelebi states, was the actual form of leadership which Plato had dreamt.4

Ottoman Empire sustained, primarily our religion, and provided true version of freedom and social security. Everyone, Muslims and non-Muslims, enjoyed their idealistic lifestyle which reduced discord between various social group and ultimately increased longevity of the Empire.

“The reason of the fall of Empire (in 1922-23) was incompetency with the western industrial revolution which equipped them with might of machines and war arsenals”.

    Western Imperialism

Western imperialism was the web to oppress people without even allowing them to scream for help. As Ottoman Empire became weak and exhausted, various Western powers invaded the region to gain their mutual interests and continue full scale oppression of natives with their might and power. In 1916, an agreement negotiated by Sir Mark Sykes (1879-1919) and François Georges-Picot (1870-1951), called as Sykes-Picot agreement5. It was a secret deal to divide Ottoman region into British and French colonialists. They did it with aim to weaken the Ottoman might and mark long-lasting divisions of the region. Under this agreement, French controlled North and British south. This led to the divisions which we see today and even they erased of the then Ottoman map which only depictes names of regions like Hijaz. In 1917, Balfour Decleration was passed for the establishment of Jewish state in Palestine. Woodrow Wilson, in 1919, led the foundation of League of Nations which acted as a law body for approving these divisions. They recognised Israel as a state and not Palestine. It was a clear sign of expanding Israel state as well as oppressing Arabs in their homeland.

    Arab sold Economy of Ummah

The creation of Israel and selling economy of Ummah were the two deepest tragedies in Ummah. It was 1930s when oil reserves were found in Saudi Arabia that moved US by its volumous amount. In 1945, when Abdul Aziz ibn Saud was the King of Saudi Arabia, a meeting was held with Franklin D Roosevelt for acquiring oil deal and fulfill Jewish interests6. Roosevelt persuaded the King in agreeing a permanent deal of oil with America and allowing 10,000 Jews for settling in Palestine.

Kings sold blood and economy of Ummah for establishing pleasant relationship with our enemies

It is this Roosevelt that funded modern day education system for developing docile subjects and factory workers, How can we continue their system of education which primarily serve Jewish interests.

    Summary

We have seen in above their cruel approaches in controlling our economy leaving us their servants. Also we have seen the perpetual effort for the creation of Jewish state.

In 1928, Husain al Bina led the foundation of an organisation known as Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan ul Muslimeen) in Egypt. The organisation had prioritised Islamic way (khilafat) of governance. Supporters of the organisation faced continual subjugation and oppression from the government for foreign interests. During the period of Gammal Nasser, 1950s-1960s, it’s members were arrested, like Sayyed Qutb, and even many suffered execution, such as Hasan al-Binna7.8 As Muslim Brotherhood won election in 2011, Mohammad Morsi was shortly ousted in 2013 and impresoned by the coalition of Saudi Arabia, US, Israel.

Palestinian students supporting the militant group Hamas hold a poster depicting Hassan Al-Banna, during an election campaign for students’ council at Palestine Polytechnic University in the West Bank city of Hebron in 2015Summary

Guess the madness played by our rulers in the pursuit of comfort and sustain their rank.

In 1956, Gammal Nasser tried to Nationalise Suez Canal for the development of Aswan High Dam that was subsequently followed by the attack from Israel, British and French which otherwise were opponents.9

    Notes

They played a game of a butcher to collectively undermine Arab state and ate like hungry dogs! We can’t forget Afghan and Iraq invasion, we can’t neglect destruction of Syria and Yeman, we can’t fade away the assassination of Libyan Gaddafi who promoted justed.

    Summarize

There are two factors for Western animosity towards Arabs; Religion and Resources. They put their every effort undermining Islam by circulating propagandas against it and killed Millions of Muslims without making a single sigh. We need to return to our Islamic values and our culture. As religion and culture are strong forces that unites people. As Zuraykh, member of Arab Nationalist Movement, states

whenever Islam was flourishing, so was Arab civilization; and whenever Islam “reduced itself to beliefs transmitted blindly and religious laws and statutes unwisely imposed, Arab civilization waned”.10

Also, Arab reserves allured them so deep that they crossed every redline in achieving them.

Islamic history has lost it's essense among Muslims as they have been overwhelmed by history of other Empires which decreased interest to undertake Islamic history as a mirror image for the pursuit of knowledge and excellence. Misinformation bombardment have rooted conviction of "Muslims as weak and have made zero contribution" in the development of modern day lifestyle. This article would be a brief source of motivation for Muslims to resort their legacy of predecessors while defending against wrong stereotypes and defamation in the mainstream. The article will first mention the importance of history in terms of Quran and Sunnah and then relate some brief stories of Muslims who were eager for acquiring knowledge, developed foundation of almost every branch of the modern science and technology. Our emphasis would not be more for advent of science, as Muslims played major role in that also, but rather to open mind of the reader to choose Islamic civilization as the most suitable way of living in every time and today also.

Allah ﷻ has himself mentioned various stories of previous nations.

It is We who relate to you, [O Muḥammad], their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.1 Allah mentions story of righteous people, here we learn to appreciate these characters as possessed by these righteous people. Allah also mentions verses of forbidden actions as of “people of Loot and Thamud”. In this way, Allah teaches us to be “like ” and “not like” people for easy comprehension and understanding.

Allah has sent His Prophet ﷺ to guide the humanity. How he disposed his character and led Muslims, his companions as role models for learning and implementing religion, this all makes history to guide future generations. Thus, history encompasses source of guidance to achieve our destiny.

    Quest for knowledge

As one of the prominent Islamic thinker, Mohammad Iqbal says 2

یاد عہد رفتہ میری خاک کو اسیر ہے

میرا ماضی میرے استقبال کا تفسیر ہے

Impression of my past is the treatment of my soul

My past is the description of my future

The best description for the quest of knowledge among our predecessors can be found in their history. The paragraph from the book ابن رشد (Ibn Rushd)3

In the beginning of Abbasid Caliphate, writing and editing interests rose among Muslims, Abu Hanifah with his companions were engaged in jurisprudence in kufa (Iraq), Imam Malik with Mohammad bin Ishaq,in Madina, were engaged in the battles (fought by Prophet ﷺ) and biography. Knowledge of Hadith which was considered sacred and needed, Imam Malik wrote Muwatta which became famous, Ibn Zaid kurtubi (Andulus) migrated to Madina to listen (learn) Muwatta from Imam Malik, returned to his homeland to start teaching it, in the same way anew Berberi Muslim Yahya bin Yahya Masmudi got interested in supporting religion, came to Imam Malik to listen Muwatta, some missed portions completed from Ibn Zaid, as eagerness rose for learning fiq (jurisprudence), he returned to Madina for Imam Malik but he was passed away, learning from Malik’s student Ibn Al Kasim became necessary, and went to Egypt and Africa to complete fiq, returned to homeland where Hisham was the governer. The excellence of Hisham’s devotion and respect for Yahya bin Yahya was, he never did anything without Yahya’s consultation. Hisham engaged for the welfare of his country and made it cheerful.

    Distortion of Islamic History

After the fall of Ottomans, they (non muslims) always searched tricks to weaken our Ummah. They knew the power of islamic faith and displayed that in several occasions. As the efforts for erasing islamic History are uncountable, I want to mention some exegesis from Sonja Brentjes’ unprecedented book.

Professor Sonja Brentjes’ book 1001 Distortions How (not) to Narrate History of Science, Medicine and Technology in Non-Western Cultures that she published together with Professor Taner Edis and Professor Lutz Richter-Bernburg in response to the many misrepresentations of history and science in the 2012 catalogue of the 1001 Inventions exhibition. Professor Brentjes describes how the exhibition organisers and contributors, who are not historians, have extracted portions of academic narratives, effectively removed their richness in detail and rearranged them as outmoded tales of glory, success, priority and progress. She also explains

how “criticising academically false stories about such topics need to be undertaken for all such cases, not merely for those told by Eurocentric writers against non-Western histories”. In order to make it clear to the general public that their academic criticism was not another act of Islamophobia, but a defence of academic reliability, solid research, and honesty, the editors included other case studies examining political appropriation and the abuse of stories about past or contemporary sciences. The influence of misrepresentation of inventions can be guessed from those professors who think Muslims as backward and subordinate.

    How beautifully she reprimands a Muslim professor as follows;

Sonja Brentjes objects to Professor Ahmad Ragab’s grave misrepresentation of her position in the debate for and against the false narratives in 1001 Inventions. She describes it as recasting medieval Muslims as “backward third-worlders”, referring to their elementary contribution and “their exclusion from the ranks of knowledge-makers”.This is how greatly there distorted literature has affected our people. It should be our priority to learn and teach islamic history to our children and others and recommending them to strong hold with it for its preservation and dissemination to others.

Let every Muslim historian know not to degrade Islamic civilization by representing Westerners as superior to them rather expose to true sources of knowledge and disseminate that forward.

Today, Muslims have lost their way as they were raised devoid of Islamic history and it’s significance. Reture to our history is essential to learn proper way of living and freeing ourselves from the reign of foreigners.

    Get Up Muslim

Islam is a vital element for an islamic society. It defines all sections of life, teaching all of them under unconditioned principles of the Most Sovereign, Most Merciful Allah ﷻ. No one has right over the resources given by Allah to consume them in other way except that He (the exalted) has commanded. Depending upon the usage of resources, we will be dealt accordingly.

Allah has created us as representatives (خليفه). It implies that we represent His sovereignty in land because of His Power and Majesty. Certainly, we should submit ourselves to Him as he is only worthy of it. Tyrannical leaders should draw lessons from the story of Pharaoh who was burnt by water (which heals burn otherwise) after being neglectful from Allah who had blessed him with enormous wealth and prosperity.

Islam strongly forbids from selling of Islamic values, identity and ethics for this worldly benefit.1

Establishment of Islamic creed can’t be attained until Muslim kingship (Khilafah) is not appointed. Caliphate (Muslim ruler) is only establishing islamic law, without following his personal opinion or desire. Thus he defines himself as a representative.2

We have now seen the purpose of establishing Allah’s ruling which can’t be replaced by anyone’s desire. Allah has mentioned them as the most tyrannous who follow themselves besides Allah as he shows ownership over things which doesn’t belong to him.

Muslims had established Allah’s rulings in the past but then they were distracted by the intervention of others hence misguided. The trauma is too deep upon Ummah which we will briefly look to remind our losses. We will look at our hardships created by these interventions in two dimensions :

  • Physical Trauma
  • Read also
  • Spiritual loss
  • Rise and fall of power
  • In physical trauma , it includes our physical losses which may be our economy, lives and loss of other things. And in spiritual loss , it combines hardships of love , affection and harmony among ourselves.

💡 Oh Allah! I have fear of rich dishes , may I not die while eating them !

    Physical Trauma

Hating, intimidating and attacking Muslims across the globe is not new. When we look at the history of Muslims, we have been suffering since long. Sometimes we saw our Bilal (ra) being tortured with hot sand and sometimes we saw our genocide on religious basis. Sometimes we were threatened by the abandonment of trade and sometimes open infedility. But we should remind Allah who says “they (non muslims) fear you (Muslims) more than Allah because they don’t understand “3 . Allah even says that you see them United as they fight against you but their hearts are fragmented and divided in reality with hate for one another. As Kissinger warns

Unite as you (non muslims) all have common enemy

All the Muslim countries have been honouring to International law which promotes violence against us. America, which recognises International law, have been supporting Israel since long. Total direct aid of America to Israel in 2003 counts $140 billion to promote illegal settlements and subordinate Muslims.

    https://youtu.be/aEdGcej-6D0?si=Zaqb15rwAAFN-JVw

Lobby of Israel and US foreign policy published by Cambridge University mentions “Israel is an only exception” in the middle East to increase war arsenals , illegal settlements and genocide of muslims without being questioned for these actions. As Camp David has rightly said “far too often, we functioned … as Israel’s lawyers”.

Remember the invasion of Iraq which devastated economy of Ummah, oil was stolen at least of $150 billion worth. Millions of Muslims have been killed without charging US. We don’t even have the right to protest against this brutality.

Afghan invasion is not any minor case for Ummah, where more than 90% of population is below poverty line (report 2021) resulted from US invasion. This country has a long history of imperialism, sometimes in the name of terrorism and sometimes women oppression. In real sense , oppression was spread by these foreign interventions , mistreating Muslim girls , infidelity of modesty, devastating economy, killing behind the scenes and the suppression of mainstream media for its exposure. And when Muslims came into power (as in Afghanistan), non-muslims started to allege and blame this whole loss to Muslim rulers who had just came into power.

Demolition of homes as well as mosques , Islamophobic slogans, hijab ban and other types of oppression is across the globe. This brief review can’t truly put forward the amount of loss which Ummah has faced and are facing today.

    Spiritual loss

Now let’s move on to spiritual side which includes our relationships, love, honour, understanding each other, harmony and social well being. Satan doesn’t feel ashamed while distancing us from each other. These interventions spread the menace of self-love, wickedness, individualism, hardened our hearts and vanished love in-between. They (non muslims ) increased marketing of women by keeping them in the darkness of women empowerment where modesty is buried in schools and public spaces. The high standards are confined to their terminology only such as parents without holding the true value of them. Our Islamic tradition is always shown as barbaric and subdued us from following it. They often used their hate slogans towards Muslims as a tool to be appointed in elections as hindutva BJP in india.

In general terms, they have harmed us in all aspects either in the name of nationalism or democracy, feminism or liberalism. We need to flee from their slavery and turn back to Allah who is the only asylum provider.

The ongoing oppression of Muslims, particularly Palestine genocide, has fully displayed their faces which crossed unbelievable boundaries like Fajr Massacre and Al Mawasi Massacre (10, sept. 2024).

    Rise and fall of power

The show of Dr. Yaqoob Ahmad was incredible who said,” non-Muslims have concept of power as linear but we (Muslims) have cyclical.”

The concept makes more sense when I went through Surah Al A’raf that fully discusses the nature of power as “rise and fall”.

And for every nation is a [specified] term. So when their time has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it]4

Current genocide of Muslims, particularly Gaza, shows the horrors that history has never witnessed. This is the completion of Misuse of western power which has to be toppled down to the ground that people would never have predicted. As Allah sent his punishment to previous nations, there remained no one to recount their story except Allah himself ﷻ.
