Donald Trump has fired at least 17 independent Inspectors General across federal agencies, in a shocking move made on the evening of Friday, January 24. This blatant violation of the 1978 Inspector General Act, which requires 30 days’ notice to Congress before such terminations, undermines critical safeguards designed to prevent abuse of power. Inspectors General were established in the wake of Watergate to ensure government accountability and transparency. Rep. Adam Schiff condemned the purge, calling it "a naked attempt to dismantle the systems of accountability that protect our democracy." The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, which has jurisdiction over government operations, is responsible for investigating actions like this. Senator Joni Ernst, who serves on the committee, recently launched the Senate Inspector General Caucus to "support federal watchdogs in their efforts to ensure government accountability and compliance with the law."
