Sequels can sometimes pale by comparison with their predecessors. Yet I Am the Dark That Answers When You Call is just as good as I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast Is Me or even better. We’re back with Laure, who struggles in the aftermath of the first book’s events. Her life goal is no more, and she has to decide what she now wants. She faces challenges, both over her dancing and her relationships. Where ballet was once all she had, she now has the possibility to change her focus. The book features character growth, and themes of parental abandonment, control and power. It reminded me a bit of The Burning Kingdom trilogy, with the presence of mold and rotting vegetation, as well as having fierce characters and manipulation. But it also feels tighter, as the story revolves around a handful of people, in a single city. These common elements however, as well as the occult theme, are things I find myself greatly enjoying. The next book by Jamison Shea is to be published in August, and I’ll be sure to check it out !
