City of Melbourne have a fleet of trucks and chippers providing maintenance and removals across the “urban forest” trees on public land. We have just taken delivery of freshly mulched wood to support community composting across all the sites we assist with. This will be left out to weather and distributed around the neighbourhood as needed.

Stunning show underway from one of the prolific and virtually indestructible Canna Lilies we raise from rhizome division on pure compost at #KensingtonTownHallCompost

One of our composters brought in home-grown white chockos for the compost volunteers. Spectacular looking fruit from a very vigorous plant. Now to decide whether to eat these ones, or start them for planting out this Spring (the compost hub fenceline gets a good 10-hours sun in Summer, so it’s a perfect location). Great to be part of a gifting and sharing economy

Hoop House Number One now up and running thanks to our hardworking #KensingtonTownHallCompost volunteers. Made entirely from the surplus urban and industrial materials thrown up and thrown away by the population of #Melbourne. Our latest cool season seedlings have moved into their new home

Kensington Town Hall Compost Hub has a “demonstration" garden where we grow food plants straight into matured compost.

This Summer we had tomatoes, basil, capsicum, leafy greens, and prolific marigolds growing which shows the benefit of the compost that we produce. We are looking forward to lettuce, beetroot, kohlrabi, rocket, coriander, broad beans, and cabbage soon. Might have to make more planting space!

Checking on moisture levels, temperature, biological activity (microbial and invertebrate) and general decomposition progress at #KensingtonTownHallCompost. Lovely to be creating a communal #soil resource on the first day International Compost Awareness Week 2024!

Some gratuitous slowmo #compost amendments today for #ICAW2024 #30DayCompostContentChallenge

Mixed food and garden waste has been contributed by community composters - adding fine browns to ensure a good C:N ratio (just going by feel), and a splash of water to ensure good moisture levels to promote active microbial colonisation #KensingtonCompost #CommunityComposting #EarthDayEveryDay #betterSoilBetterLifeBetterFuture

A lot of larger pieces of material left over from hot composting are too big, especially for raising seeds in...

We have a screening bay to sift these out. Ultra-fine 11mm mesh is very time consuming to push a cubic metre of compost through, but 20mm apertures seem about right for quick sieving and a reasonable grade of compost.

This year will be working on building a screening trommel to try and speed the process up even more!

Kensington has been community composting for nearly 10 years now. In 2018 we set up a communal compost hub on council land at the Town Hall.

Today, we are part of Kensington Compost Network public compost stations across the suburb (as well as compost stations at local childcare facilities). Hopefully one day all organic material from our neighbourhood will be processed locally to support a sustainable food system!
