Houston derecho’s ‘bouncing’ winds caused extensive damage to skyscrapers, study finds

Researchers focused on five tall buildings in downtown Houston that were designed to withstand category 4 hurricane winds of up to 67 meters per second. Despite the derecho winds reaching a top speed of 40 meters per second, a bouncing effect caused more damage.

Five Houston buildings received historic landmark designations

The designations include a former department store, three historic houses and a packing plant, bringing the total historic designation inventory to 307 landmarks and 182 protected landmarks, according to the City of Houston.
