One very positive item I've learned since this story broke, CBC has the rights to the PWHL games, so there's a very strong chance we could have a regular, online home for those games, wouldn't that be great?

"CBC ends Hockey night in Canada as NHL rights deal with Sportsnet expires."
Not sure how I feel about this. I always did prefer TSN's hockey coverage, but CBC was solid before Sportsnet took over. I feel Rogers only offers a mediocre broadcast experience compared to the CBC.
Not a big hockey fan but this just seems sad. 😢
I grew up with the "Hockey Night in Canada" theme song every Saturday evening.

CBC will no longer broadcast NHL hockey games after it and national rights-holder Rogers Sportsnet were unable to come to agreement on a new sublicensing deal that would have allowed the public broadcaster to air games on its Saturday program Hockey Night in Canada.
Holy crap I just found this ancient Wayne Gretzky jeans commercial. 😆

Well, I didn’t expect this to happen so soon. I thought maybe two or three more years but it’s happening now.
All NHL games will be exclusively on cable except only few on CityTV.
End of an era for NHL in Canada. (And not a good one)
It’s a wrong move Sportsnet have made. And this just put CBC as a whole on life support right now.
An interesting rule change for the 2026-2027 season:
"Additionally, as part of the new CBA, the 2026–27 season will see the end of the use of amateur emergency back-up goaltenders (EBUGs) supplied by the home team for each game; instead, teams must hire their own emergency goaltender who will travel with the team and is permitted to have other non-player team duties."
