As part of #HistFest23 yesterday, Anne Dolan and Eve Morrison spoke about their work editing and transcribing the Ernie O'Malley Notebooks using the software Transkribus. The IMC will publish their work in 8 vols from 2024. UCD Digital Library will then publish the digitised notebooks online with the transcriptions. Eve gave an overview of Ernie's notebooks. Anne discussed what Transkribus makes possible, but also what it can't do and how humans are still necessary to deal with the subtleties.

For #HistFest23 Drs Anne Dolan and Eve Morrison show how ground-breaking software Transkribus read the famously illegible notebooks of Ernie O'Malley, Irish revolutionary.

A public lecture discussing the project to transcribe and edit the notebooks will be held at noon, Saturday 7 October in 45 Merrion Sq.

The notebooks form part of Ernie O'Malley's papers held in UCD Archives.

"Reading the Unreadable — Ernie O'Malley’s notebooks"

For #HistFest23 Dr Anne Dolan and Dr Eve Morrison discuss their work to publish O'Malley's interviews with 451 anti-Treaty veterans about their eye-witness accounts of the Irish Revolutionary period.

The notebooks are held in UCD Archives. UCD Digital Library will then publish the digitised notebooks with the transcriptions alongside.

Holy moly, I failed to register that the Paul McGann in the programme to interview Frank McDonough was *that* Paul McGann. #HistFest23 #DublinHistoryFestival
