Recent changes to the City of Houston’s billing system for residential water customers, made in response to a rash of artificially inflated bills during the last year or so, will be reflected in the statements sent out during the month of May.

Houston’s new set usage system to address inflated water bills to be reflected in May statements

New Mayor John Whitmire’s “Water Bill Improvement Plan,” in which single-family residential customers will temporarily be charged a fixed monthly amount, took effect April 1. The initiative eliminated Houston Public Works’ previous practice of charging estimated amounts to customers with faulty electronic meter-reading devices, which in many cases led to residents being charged for much more water than they actually used.

The nine proposals would’ve kicked in immediately, bringing relief to some residents whose water bills have gone as high as $1,000 or more.
