At the time, using lines of latitude and longitude probably seemed logical and modern and very Jeffersonian.
The modern-day problems that they cause, from places entirely inaccessible via land from the rest of their own countries to that peace library whose main entrance is not legally (and now not physically) accessible to Canadians, does tend to suggest that the older practice of following the physical geography would have been wiser.
If they had followed the middle of the river, for example, the #HaskellFreeLibrary could have been built on an island.
