These printers follow an ancient, pre-unicode control language and you can only load two code pages at a time (one is ASCII, the other one whatever special characters you like). You need to swap code pages if you want to print non-ASCII things, but different printers have different code pages included. This is the language https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESC/P
