triple-whammy for Web2 era socmed sites today. for
#twitter, it has confirmed that highly likely 20 million users private data were exposed to a zero-day hack.
#tiktok under investigation for ads targeted to minors and user data ending up in prc. meanwhile,
#facebook fined today for the 4th time for lapses in data protection security.
mind u may ask what are those millions of
#hackeddata? users info, name, location, financial info, contact numbers, all posts which reveal your feelings and opinions useful for business ads and political data crunch purposes. all contact info in your contact phonebook, including all photos on your phone. yes, whenever u use facebook and twitter, instagram and tiktok, u opt to give them permission to access all your photos and videos. not just the ones you post and share. if this doesnt concern u, wait till u see yourself, your family, and your childrens info being bought and sold in the dark web. u think socmed is free to use? think again.
we've all seen the rise and fall of
#Web1 pages in 1990s and early 2000s, as we saw the rise of
#Web2 social media sites. im rather sure that at some point in time in 2020s or 2030s, we'll see the demise of Web2 including some of its amusing personalities. was it heraclitus who wrote, nothing is permanent? that's a truism that is also applicable in tech world.
what's next after Web2? well,
#Web3. decentralized, federated, interoperable, ads algorithm manipulation free, community-instance-run, and data privacy respecting socmed apps. the next generation internet users would be more mindful that data is the new oil and gold. and they wont just give it easily and freely.
