I suspect Google has an image problem
Not a problem with images. But a problem with their image. Particularly amongst the tech and start-up world.
4 September marked the firm's 25th anniversary --- a notable milestone.
A few stories were submitted to Hacker News, which caters to hackers and start-ups (though the readership is somewhat broader). None fared especially well, and they were ultimately merged into a single item.
Which is sitting squarely as the 80th ranked story of the day as is evident here on HN's front page archive: https://news.ycombinator.com/front?day=2023-09-04&p=3
The day's top story? "Writing a C compiler in 500 lines of Python" (Yes, HN leans technical.)
I've come to understand a few things about HN and its rankings. In particular, stories can be penalised if a "flamewar detector" is triggered: more than 40 comments and comments > votes. That's possible, as the item has 75 votes and 208 comments, though I suspect as well that the story was actively flagged.
Oh, except for something I've just remembered: when posts are merged, the flamewar detector is generally disabled. Which would suggest that the story was in fact flagged. Hrm...
Discussion ... varied, but trends negative.
I suspect so long as the firm remains a money-minting machine it can pay to overcome resistance. But the cool factor seems well off.
And the natives are no longer friendly.
Edit: Late add about flamewar/merge dynamics.
