@varjolintu thanks, I'd seen this config change and updated the native messaging link and it would populate fields but the ctrl U didn't work, still opened Firefox. I changed default web browser in KDE and it worked after that. Very impressed so far!
I did see in about:config that the entries for ml.chat are there. Do I need to be concerned?
I'll have a look at #waterfox as well, but Firefox is nearly out of my workflow now.

🇵🇸i can't believe i'm saying this, but after ~20 years of using Firefox, I'm using a non-Firefox* browser (ok, it's a fork of Firefox, but the little orange fox isn't on my computer anymore 😢)
The TOS change itself may not be a big thing, but Mozilla's been having too many sus moves for too long. From refusing to fight to keep DRM off of the web to their close relationship to Google to their lack of interest in the fediverse to their interest in the latest tech fad (AI).
