Anoxia begets anoxia: A positive feedback to the deoxygenation of temperate lakes

Anoxia threatens inland waters worldwide. Once it has occurred in a lake, the lack of oxygen even sets in motion a downward spiral that accelerates with increasing global warming. This is indicated by the results of an international study involving researchers of TU Bergakademie Freiberg, which were published in Global Change Biology.

Lake Gossenkölle is an alpine lake located at 2,416 m above sea level. The University of Innsbruck is running a research station on its shores since 1975 (https://www.uibk.ac.at/fakultaeten/biologie/alpine-forschungsstaetten/gossenkoellesee.html.en). Research tasks comprise the monitoring of water parameters and studies on ecological processes and various groups of aquatic organisms and, most recently, viruses. An seinem Ufer befindet sich seit 1975 eine Forschungsstation der Universität Innsbruck (https://www.uibk.ac.at/fakultaeten/biologie/alpine-forschungsstaetten/gossenkoellesee.html.de). Neben dem Monitoring von Gewässerparametern, werden diverse ökologische Prozessen und wasserlebende Organismengruppen und zuletzt auch Viren untersucht.
