Immigrant Families at Ellis Island

Augustus Frederick Sherman worked as a clerk on Ellis Island. During this time, between 1904 and 1925, he took about 250 photographs of the travelers coming through immigration. Often he would photograph immigrants that were being detained, ushering them out of the chaos of the main hall so the immigrants themselves would be the main focus.
