A survival song by Georg Neumark, from 1641.
During the German thirty-year war (1618-1648), Reformation poets and composers produced an incredible body of poetry and chorals, expressing uncrushable hope in a time of universal collapse.
These songs give me, a non-believer, persistent courage.
The clip here is from a charming German indie film from 2002, Vaya con Dios. The musical setting is by #TobiasGravenhorst, who plays the organist.
First verse, in the original German and in my own very liberal translation:
Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten //
Und hoffet auf ihn allezeit, //
Den wird er wunderlich erhalten //
In allem Kreuz und Traurigkeit. //
Wer Gott, dem Allerhöchsten, traut, //
Der hat auf keinen Sand gebaut. //
If you let our good God do his doing //
And always place your hope in Him, //
Then He will wonderfully preserve you, //
Within this world of loss and sadness. //
