Yesterday we saw the Chilean movie Matapanki at the Berlinale. In the Q&A session, the director Mapache Fuentes said that the film project began as a joke and in the spirit of not taking movies too seriously. Later, he had to explain to a German young woman in the audience why, while the film claims to be an antifascist project, they thanked a fascist rapper in the credits…
I remember having strong issues with this kind of (quite common and self-indulgent) Chilean alternative irreverence when, long time ago, I was at the university there. I guess I still have these issues. Matapanki offers a powerful aesthetics and the general idea is interesting. But the result is naive, mostly because the direction needs lots of polishing and the script is simply silly. Many seem to think this is attractive, though
