Some on the Left in Ireland have recently been calling for a French-style New Popular Front.
While that works in the French context, it doesn't make much sense in the Irish context with our proportional and preferential voting system.
A much better and more realistic aim in Ireland is for the smaller progressive/environmental/left-wing parties and independents to form a democratic electoral alliance, similar to the recent successful Sumar alliance in Spain.
