Last day. We closed up the city house, contents packed & moved out. I walked around the empty rooms, taking a video record for reasons I can't fully explain. Moving is a gigantic effort, a decisive break with 22 years of parenthood, adolescence, family crises & reconciliations. I'm happy to go. Loose ends are tied up, with some frayed knots. It's time to change direction. We face the future with high ambitions. All the family are on board (after some persuasion). We can't complain, living by the sea in a house overflowing with baggage, crates of books, pictures & furniture from elsewhere isn't the worst way to spend the summer. I wish the new owners of our old house well. Good luck to them. Our past is their future. Our future is ours to determine, as best we can, as ever.
