Waka/JoewakaI just had a photo pop up from two years ago. I was watching the Gold Cup final in Las Vegas. The U.S. beat Mexico 1-0 with a header in the 117th minute.
My family there also introduced me to Ted Lasso that evening after the match! ⚽
Arp Laszlo • Comics • ADHDI dunno when #USSoccer is going to hire a coach, but I hope it’s not #GreggBerhalter again. He did well culture-wise but his player selection during the cycle was always a bit off until the end when he decided on his first team (which, tbf, decided itself).
But the loss to #Holland had two major mistakes that we can’t afford to give him 4 years to correct:
1) He ran the first team into the ground and they were gassed v Belgium. This correlates to some questionable player selection during the cycle and and not having backups he trusted. For example, #TylerAdams was irreplaceable and with such a huge drop off to defense-only #KellynAcosta, not resting Adams or having a plan to cover for when he’s not 100% was indefensible. And I still don’t get #JoeScally’s lack of minutes during the cycle with all his #Bundesliga minutes.
2) Gregg had no response to #LouisVanGaal’s tactics, both of their goals were scored in similar fashion. All LVG did was pull players out of position and our fatigue meant we couldn’t recover as fast and were prone to mistakes. Gregg got better at halftime adjustments over the cycle but we needed adjustments well before halftime.
I don’t know who is the right coach for the #USMNT now, but it’s not Gregg. I just hope they’re not limiting the pool to only American or #MLS coaches (or brothers of executives).

I appreciate that he turned down hundred$ of million$ from the Saudi league in favor of a chance to truly grow the sport and not work in a country with a shit human rights record. (I also wonder if his deal to hawk Saudi tourism gave him some insight on whether taking more of their money would be a good idea or not.)
