The work here just never stops. Out of our jungle-like tangle of baby #FoodForest there is a constant harvest of something or another.

Within the last week Michael has brought in:

🌱chia (we got just over a pound of clean seed - and there's tons more to be brought in),

🔥 hot peppers (7 pot chocolate bubble gum - its a continual harvest and we're drying down about 2 kg every time we harvest off the plants),

🌿black beans ( about 8kg set aside for eating), and

🌾corn ( a white dent variety, but because of rains it needed to be harvested early).

He's also harvested some peanuts he'll be replanting, papayas, arugula, and... The guamo still has fruit on it!

🇻🇪🇻🇪🇻🇪

It's a jungle out there! It looks messy, but it's #regenerative. How many species can you spot that are not considered weeds?

Do ya'll remember months ago when I posted about planting out a #cacao nursery? Well, those plants have mostly prospered and little by little they are getting transplanted into their permanent homes. The goal for this week is to get the last of nearly 1500 baby trees in the ground.

🌿🌱🌿🌱

Remember when I posted months ago about putting together a #cacao nursery?

The plants have grown like mad & are slowly finding their way to permanent homes. And they are thriving. It's exciting to see the new growth they put on as soon as they're out of their nursery bags. Some of them are already over a meter tall!

One of the varieties we'll be planting is known as #cafe guamo or cafe brazil around these parts. People often say this is a wild variety of #coffee, but it is yet another import from the colonial period (It's been traced back to Uganda) that naturalized into the local environment. This particular species of lyberica coffee grows as a tree - up to 20 meters tall - and is much appreciated for its distinctly strong yet fruity flavor with little to no bitterness.

I've been quiet for a few days because I am currently in Colombia. When I asked what I should purchase to bring home, I got a list of fruit seeds. 😆 Now I have to go and hunt down certain exotic fruits to eat!

Rollinia, fresh acai fruit, yellow dragon fruit, gooseberry, and others...

Oh, the joys of partnering up with a diversity obsessed agroecologist farmer. 😂😂

Michael continues to make amazing headway on our #FoodForest slope, getting more cacao plants in the ground every day - along with banana, plantain, and a whole slew of other trees. Nowadays he's often accompanied by our toucan babies (they're actually collared aracari). They roam freely around the property, constantly surprising us in new and unexpected places.

My haul from the north side of the farm. Wild black raspberries and golden oyster mushrooms. Who says #foraging can't be sustainable?

The pond clean up is finished! The cattails have been thinned, the creeping pasture grasses cut back, and other aquatic plants pulled back from the brink of a takeover. M even got a new variety of lotus planted.

It's incredible to me how this pond we built has integrated into the landscape so naturally - but the landscape just wants to swallow it back up! Growth rates in the tropics are no joke.

The nursery is where all the magic starts. If you look closely you'll find baby black pepper plants, cacao trees, pardillos, guavas, and other random tropical fruit trees, all waiting patiently to be planted in their permanent place in the food forest.
