The unfurling fiddleheads of Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides). Christmas fern is an evergreen fern and the previous years foliage typically dies back once the new fronds emerge and start growing.

Fiddlehead season will continue for a few more weeks as other fern species begin to grow.

I don't know how weird or rare this is but there's a season in #NewEngland when the sprouts of fiddle head ferns are cooked in butter or steamed and they are friggin delicious! I mean ferns and mushrooms right, wildly different life but human guts can make them nutritious for some evolutionary reason!
