This is Alvin, the unofficial palace cat of Schloss Augustusburg in Brühl near Cologne. He lives in the palace gardens year round and is beloved throughout the city. Also famous for his one blue and one yellow eye. He even has his own Facebook profile. https://www.facebook.com/share/1CTMxWnznw/

In 1908, a small stray kitten appeared at the gates of the British Museum in London. Day after day, he returned, sitting patiently as if waiting to be hired. One guard, Henry, finally took him in, naming him Mike — and giving him an unofficial job.
Mike became a fixture of the museum. He had a gift: he could drive away any dog without laying a paw on them. A piercing stare, a low, strange sound — and even the largest dogs would retreat. Newspapers dubbed him “the cat who would not allow any dog into the British Museum.”
But Mike’s most important duty was hunting rats that threatened the priceless artifacts inside. One staff member called him “a cat of the rank of an ancient warrior.”
For two decades, Mike patrolled the museum until his death in 1929. He was buried on the grounds, honored with an obituary in the museum’s own magazine. A small memorial still marks his resting place — a reminder that loyalty, skill, and quiet diligence can make even a stray kitten part of history.

Hello Mastodon mates, how you doing?

I’ve been away on long-awaited city break hols; catching up with out-of-town mates and taking in an internet-famous cat trail. 🥰

If you follow certain famous cats, you might recognise these:

In the winter of 1971 photographer Jim McCrary photographed Carole King for her Tapestry album. Remembering a Kodak survey that said cats were the most popular subject people photographed (after their own children), McCrary asked if he could add the sleeping cat on the other side of the room to the scene. Telemachus, the cat, only remained for three pictures ... but that was enough.

That image, and the album's music have been ingrained in my mind. I've always tried to make Tapestry the first album I play when I move into a new home because that's exactly how I want my home to feel.
