A fascinating contribution to black history in the UK. An episode of Fake or Fortune investigating two 19th century portraits of black women. One of the portraits was by a female artist, so also contributes to the awareness of women artists and the involvement of women in the Abolition movement.

The episode first went to air several years ago, and has had a "What happened next?" update.

#FakeOrFortune is being repeated on #ABCTVAU and the William Nicholson “Glass Jug” episode reflects badly on the expert. A clear gulf between weight of evidence and critical thinking on the one hand and an “expert’s feeling” on the other.

Fake or Fortune sparks controversy

On 12 August, BBC1 broadcast the first programme in Series 7 of Fake or Fortune, focusing their attentions on William Nicholson, describing him as one of the leading artists of his generation. The team examined a painting called Glass Jug with Pears that had been purchased as a William Nicholson from Browse & Darby, a London gallery with close historical connections to William Nicholson. They presented their evidence to Patricia Reed, the author of the definitive work on Nicholson, William Nic

Watched #FakeOrFortune last night & made a weird connection to my childhood. Realized I spent the summer of 1980 in the #Freud sea side retreat in #Walberswick. Didn't know the family before visiting England. I was 8 & a bored only child who wanted to meet people. Probably the best #summer of my childhood filled with #art, history, crabbing & lots of horseback riding. The family gifted me a horse. I named him Jason. I was so sad when my parents told me he wouldn't fit on the plane back to 🇨🇦. Lol
The show has also given me a new opinion on Turner's The Fighting Temeraire, which admittedly I never got the broo ha ha over. After seeing a restorer explain Turner's technique I have a new appreciation.

Binging #FakeOrFortune & I really dislike the Wildensteins. They seem like a bunch of poncy snots.

I’ve finally started watching #FakeOrFortune and it’s wonderful. Started with the oldest episode on the iPlayer — s02e01. A little Degas ballerina. Looks fake to me but we shall see! @tafkak
I’m addicted to #FakeOrFortune
‪The painting on tonight’s #FakeOrFortune is definitely one that I’d flog even if it turns out to be worth a tenner, never mind £50,000.‬
